D & S Tires Inc. began in January of 1971 when Dick and Sandy Critel rented the old skating
rink located at 661 South Lincoln Street. The business began as a retail tire store, offering passenger, tractor, and truck tires.
Along with the sales of tires, we offered tire services such as front end alignments, tire changes and farm service truck to offer
services outside the building. In 1972, we began to retread truck tires with Bandag continuing through 1984.
In 1978, Dick and Sandy Critel discontinued the retail side of the business and began retreading truck tires for agricultural use.
Retreading tires is great for environment, it involves recycling tire casings and making them reusable on different agricultural
equipment. Pivot tires have become a large part of the business. Pivot tires are made from old truck casings that are
shipped into our plant from all over the country and then buffed, recapped and placed in a hot cap mold to form the tire.
in addition to pivot tires, other agricultural tires are also retreaded at the main location, including tires for farm implements
to dealerships or manufacturers in the Midwest area.
All mounting of the retread tires on customer wheels is completed and shipped from our mounting shop location at 535 North Lincoln,
which is the former Scharfen Cafe location, purchased in 2005.
D & S Tires, Inc. also handles tires for floatation vehicles and implements. Floatation tires allow the applicator to work
in wet or poor weather conditions where other tires or duals would sink in. Applications for these floatation tires are very wide
spread in use.
Our Welding Shop is located at 217 West Sherman Street. We can adapt or rebuild wheels to fit almost any application for agricultural
and truck use to compliment our other shops or personal use.
Approximately five years ago, we began to rebuild rubber tracks for
agricultural equipment. Later due to demand we began replacing
guide blocks. We also rebuild drive wheels, mid rollers and idler wheels on all makes of tractors for farm and construction use.
Customers for these services come from all over the USA and Canada.
D & S Tires Inc. is a family run business. Dick and Sandy Critel's son-in-law, Marlan
Elbert, manager, has been working at the main plant
in West Point since 2000. Due to the demand for
tracks and agricultural equipment, D & S Tires, Inc.
has expanded to Richmond, Indiana. The Richmond,
Indiana plant will is managed by Dick and Sandy's oldest daughter Tammy Scholtz. |
